چکیده

Increased body iron stores are associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In conceptual agreement, increased serum ferritin levels are positively associated with the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in men and adult preand postmenopausal women (1) and with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in both men (2) and women (2,3). Given that insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes are frequent in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (4,5), we hypothesize that body iron stores might be especially increased in these women.

High Serum Ferritin Concentrations in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Is Not Related to Insulin Resistance

OBJECTIVE: Some data are available on the association between components of the insulin resistance syndrome and serum ferritin. Insulin resistance is observed in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) We hypothesize that body iron stores might be increased in these women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and six people (103 PCOS patients and 103 healthy women who were matched for a...

Increased body iron stores of obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome are a consequence of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinism and are not a result of reduced menstrual losses.

OBJECTIVE Increased serum ferritin levels, indicating increased body iron stores, have been found in overweight and obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This finding might result from reduced menstrual losses secondary to oligo- or amenorrhea or from hyperinsulinism secondary to insulin resistance, because insulin favors the intestinal absorption and the tissue deposition of iron....
